 **** (1/16/2017) I have changed two of my original part descriptions to make a more concise description of these parts.

The TOP SLIDE is now referred to as the X-Y Tool Holder or X-Y. It operates just like a common X-Y Table and holds what ever tool you are using.

The R-8 Tool is now called the R-8 Dividing Head. This is a more accurate description of what it does on the grinder.

 

 

X-Y TOOL HOLDER:

The X-Y Tool Holder is an X-Y Table that holds the different grinder tools.

It move the tool X Axis and the Y Axis.

 

This movement allows precision movement to position the tool in or out without

disrupting any other setting of the index head. It supports all of the Tool Holders

for the grinder in the top of its Dove Tail Slides. This naturally dictates that all of

the tool holders must have the same accurate size Male Dovetail.

This subject will be addressed in Part # 010 along with making new Gibs.

 

 

The Cross Slide mechanism works with no modification, however the parts

are poorly made with a lot of play in the bearings and nut; also for me the

CF Knob is too small and I like to have a nice knurl to provide a better grip.

 

For that reason I am putting this section on the optional list.

 

X-Y Body Bearings:

When taken apart you will find that the Bearing Holes are oversized.

My first repair is to refit the Bearings with Bronze or Brass.

 

For the Knob side I made a bearing with a collar. You can see in the

picture that the casting is rough and is not square to the Body.

I milled a relief to allow the new Bearing Collar to seat.

 

For the Back Side, counter sink for the new bearing.

Removing the X-Y Tool Holder:

 

Remove any tool from the Index Head.

 

Take care to not lose the Gib in the top of the Dovetail Way.

 

Remove the Jam Nuts from the end of the Cross Slide Screw.

Remove the Cross Slide Screw.

Loosen the Gib screws on the Index Drum to allow the X-Y Holder to

move in and out freely.

This will allow the part to move in and out about 1”.

 

 

 

Move the X-Y Table until the round hole in the center of the Dovetail Way

lines up with the X-Y Table Nut. Use a magnet, work the CS Nut out of

the X-Y hole.

Now the X-Y Table will slide off.

Questions from readers:

 

Now my question is, that after I machined the slot for the new nut, there is still a significant backlash in the reading oft the scale and the nonius (it is the same as vernier).  I made the nut very tight to fit into the slot.

Do you think, that this is meaningless, in case you always start to move the cross slide from the same direction before reading the scale.  Or do you have a different solution, in the meantime?

It is wonderful to hear from you.  I never considered making the nut out of brass; I love the idea and will most likely do the same in the future.

I have a lot of backlash in my screw as well.  I do not think it would be possible to eliminate all excess play.  Even my Bridgeport Mill has play after I adjust the nut and tighten it.  This is why a lot of mill owners install ball screws.

I always approach a setting by backing off and resetting the adjustment.
